The Problem

The quality of heavy fuel oils used in power plants is increasingly deteriorating. As refineries become more efficient in extracting more of the lighter fractions from the crude, the quality of the residual fuels gets lower and lower.

In view of the above, operating a power plant has become increasingly challenging. Poor quality fuels reduce the thermal efficiency of the machinery and increase the specific fuel consumption. This results in increased cost of power generation. Poor quality fuel also increases the wear and tear of the rubbing parts of the machinery and increases the number of breakdowns. Each breakdown reduces the availability factor of the machinery which directly impacts the profitability of power generation.

The Solution

Viswa Lab has been in existence for over 27 years servicing the engine operators on a vast number of land based power plants as well as ship installations. Our core business is fuel oil analysis, problem fuel in depth investigation and solution providers for fuels. We also undertake other oil analysis such as lube oil analysis, system oil, hydraulic oil and transformer oil.

Viswa Lab carries a reputation as a "Problem Solving Lab" with 4 PhDs and 14 highly experienced marine Power plant engineers, with strong association with both major engine manufacturers MAN and Wartsila.

Viswa Lab recognizes that in order to improve the efficiency of operation of a power plant, the primary requisite is professional training and education of the plant operators. Viswa Lab carries out seminars to encourage learning in the plant operators.

These educated operators become empowered to understand tests, reports and recognize when there may be a problem.
